Story
Every film, regardless of length, tells a story and every story is a journey. Your audience embarks at the beginning, or setup, travels through a series of logical waypoints, each designed to build on what came before, and alights at the destination or resolution. The resolution explains the journey at an emotional level in a way that communicates and affirms your core message.
Genre
How you tell your story is the most important decision you will make. Film offers you a huge range of genres and techniques, only a few of which will be most appropriate for your story, the unique world it exists in and your available resources. Finding the right form for your film will ensure your audience is most inclined to consider your message.
Structure
The way in which you structure your story determines how successfully it will engage your audience. Every film, even the shortest, needs a beginning, a middle and an end. Setting up your story properly, leading your audience through it and paying it off to their satisfaction will ensure they embrace your message at an emotional level, the most essential ingredient of effective communication.
Tone
The tone of your film establishes your relationship with the audience and is determined by every constituent of it, from the spoken words and the music on the soundtrack to the manner of the contributors, the quality and style of the pictures and the pace of the editing. Setting the right tone determines the feelings your story will elicit in your audience, their emotional connection with your story and thus the effectiveness of your message.

It’s easy to imagine that great filmmaking is simply a matter of having the best equipment and the skills to use it well. Whilst that’s important, the truth is that by far the greatest and most demanding ingredients of good filmmaking, for any purpose and in any genre, are the skills and experience to create powerful, engaging and persuasive narratives.
